The spreading effect of the spreader roll is obtained through the curved steel shaft onto which rotate some rolls mounted on ball bearings. Externally onto the rolls is fitted, as a rule, a rubber sleeve which is free to rotate. The curved spreader rolls is used for plastic films, paper, fabrics and similar products, or any time the installation of other types of roll is impossible.

The wrapping angle "W" is determined by the type of material being processed. The following angles of wrap are recommended:

In the process of paper production and processing, due to the shrinkage force of paper cross section, the paper often appears wrinkles during operation. In the application of the spreader roll, when the coil is close to the entrance span L of the spreader roll, the edges of both sides of the paper begin to tilt towards the end of the corresponding spreader roll, and then slowly stretch the paper to obtain the tension effect, so as to prevent wrinkling. When the paper contacts the surface of the spreader roll, the edge of the paper will move further, so that every point of the paper is transported perpendicular to the roller surface.
