Refiner Plate Selection: Softwood vs. Hardwood Pulp
Use fine-bar plates with low specific edge load (0.2–1.0 J/m) for hardwood to preserve short fibers and promote bonding. Use coarser fillings with higher SEL (1.5–3 J/m) for softwood to develop long fibers without excessive shortening. See REFINER PLATES FOR PAPER MILL.
Hardwood: fine bars, high bar density, shallow grooves, low SEL.
Softwood: coarser fillings, deeper grooves, higher SEL.
Deep-groove plates on hardwood let short fibers pass unrefined.
Hardness alone does not guarantee plate life.

Working Principle: Bar edges apply energy to pulp. Fine bars raise edge length and lower SEL, producing many gentle impacts. Coarse bars deliver fewer, stronger impacts. Hardwood needs repeated gentle action; softwood tolerates higher intensity. Review WHICH FACTORS AFFECT THE QUALITY OF REFINING PULP1.

Selection Guide:
Confirm fiber mix and target freeness.
Set SEL: 0.2–1.0 J/m HW; 1.5–3 J/m SW.
Match bar width, groove depth, density.
Verify refiner model and dimensions.
Select alloy for wear, toughness, corrosion.
Trial and monitor freeness, fiber length, fines, kWh/t.
For plate options, see DOUBLE DISC REFINER PLATES and CONICAL REFINER FILLINGS.
Procurement Checklist: Refiner model, OEM drawing, plate OD/ID/thickness, bar and groove dimensions, alloy grade, hardness report, dynamic balancing record, MOQ, lead time, packaging. Ask whether the supplier can manufacture to drawing, provide material reports, and support OEM replacement. See REFINER PLATES FOR ANDRITZ REFINERS.

Maintenance: Daily check pressure, current, kWh/t. Monthly measure bar height. Replace when bar height <1.5–2.0 mm or kWh/t rises without freeness response.
Case Study: 250,000 t/y fine paper mill, 70% HW / 30% SW, 42-inch double disc refiner, target 38 °SR. Compromise plate caused HW length loss, high fines, 28 kWh/t, 55-day life. Fine-bar HW plate (SEL ≈0.6 J/m) plus coarser SW plate (SEL ≈2.0 J/m) reduced energy to 23.5 kWh/t (≈16%) and extended life to 85 days. See CASE.
FAQ:
Can one plate handle both? Usually not optimally; separate patterns give better fiber development. See REFINER FILLINGS FOR DDR.
What SEL for hardwood? Start at 0.2–1.0 J/m and monitor fiber length and fines.
What SEL for softwood? Start at 1.5–3 J/m; higher intensity risks shortening.
Does harder mean longer life? No; balance hardness with toughness and corrosion resistance.
Conclusion: Match the plate to fiber type, refiner, and paper grade. Hardwood: fine bars, low SEL. Softwood: coarser fillings, higher SEL. Verify material and OEM compatibility. See HUATAO PAPERMAKING REFINER PLATES and REFINER PLATES FOR PAPER MAKING.
